When Your Children Hurt You

There are days your children hurt you.hurt

I heard a new mom share her complete joy when her firstborn was laid on her chest. The universal moment a mom feels where hope, joy, and love comes together.

New moms aren’t told how it feels when those feelings are invaded with hurt. Hurt that goes deep coming from the one you gave birth too.

It might be from things your child does physically or emotionally.

It might be from the choices they make or the words they say.

It might be from things they’re unable to control because of physical or mental limitations.

It might be from pain you’ve inflicted that’s coming back at you.

It hurts.

It hurts because you can’t make it right in the moment like you did during infancy, when cries were comforted by your presence or touch.

Now, they push you away.

Though your emotions say, “There’s no hope,”  God’s word says differently.

Ephesians 3:14-21 says,

For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. (Eph 3:14-21, NIV)

God is the author of families. Every family receives their name and breath from Him. God is the Comforter and Hope for hurting moms and kids.

Satan is the enemy of families. He roams around seeking to destroy them through conflict, selfishness, addictions, mental health, infidelity and self-seeking pleasures. But he isn’t the ruler or redeemer of time. God is.

God’s love is so deep, so wide and high we can’t grasp it. You and your family are His namesake. So is your child who’s causing you heartache.

God is able to do immeasurable more than you can ask or imagine.

Have you asked Him?

Wherever your motherhood journey has you today, know that God is bigger than the situation you’re in. He’s bigger than your child’s pain and bigger than yours. Ask Him to enter your pain and do immeasurably more than you can ask or imagine.

Then believe He will.

Lord, thank you for your word that reminds us of truths we easily forget. Thank you for being immeasurable and for healing immeasurably. Will you do that in my situation right now. Thank you for being my hope. Amen.

    Amen…this was part of a conversation I have been having with a precious friend, an empty-nester, who finds herself with hurts from our adult children. We both shared, taking off the mask, and allowed God to meet us. It is a part of motherhood we don’t discuss and especially if we are Christian women, because we feel we should be mature enough for it not to hurt. Great piece and so needed in the Body of Christ.
