Hey, Look!

Apr 6, 2012 | Faith

I’m a great multi-tasker.
I can easily do a lot of things at one time because
(heaven forbid)
I would waste some time, or rest or something.

But I’m quickly finding out in my fortysomething world that I’ll be one of those grandmas who blows her house up because I turned on the stove burner and went into the laundry room to check on the wash only to remember I needed to bring the clothes in off the line, so while I’m wandering out to the clothesline pole

Kaboom!

The house will be in flames from the gas burner that ignited in flames.  I will stand there remembering I forgot to put the pot with the green beans on the burner.

Distractions.

I was reminded about distractions the other day as our new housedog, a puppy yet just under a year, was taken out to do her duties.

The spring air was fresh and she frolicked around like she’s never seen the sun in her life.

While she was on her way to (piddle)

She got distracted by a butterfly.

She chased it wherever it went and forgot all about the urgent needs that compelled her to go outside in the first place.

An innocent distraction.

About a week before, the same puppy was distracted by a bird that swooped down on top of her.  She followed that thing to a place she’d never gone before

the road.

Yep, little Pollyanna followed that thing right across the road where big ole’ semis go whizzing past.

A could-have-been-deadly distraction.

As I’ve watched our innocent little house dog in these moments, I’ve been reminded of how easily we get distracted by little things so seemingly harmless.

Just like birds and butterflies, beautiful things that can take our eyes and focus off the important and safe things of life.

How easily it is for us to chase after those distractions with such fervor it, our sensibility to danger goes right out the window.

I’d like to think I’m a butterfly chaser, enjoying life as I experience it around me,
just like little Polly-puppie on a bright spring day.

But a butterfly-chaser can also be a bird chaser……following something fanciful right into the face of danger. (Honk Honk little doggie on the road!)

For me, I realize I have to be more and more intentional to make sure I’m leashed to the things that prevent me from chasing after the wrong things.

God’s word
truthful friends
my children
and husband

Living life on the fly can be too risky when a fun little butterfly comes flitting our way, distracting us from what’s most important.

I’m wondering if you, like me, have distractions that call you away from what is safe.

What can you intentionally do to keep you from harm’s way when the distractions come?

Now, the stove-burner-Kaboom thing?  that’s an entirely different story.

My kids may just buy me one of those shock-collars soon.

Hey….shock collars…..distracting butterflies…..not a bad idea……..

Hi Brenda 🙂 What a great post (made me giggle!)I definitely allow myself to get caught up in too much and sometimes lose my focus and become distracted from the things that are really important. I have to be careful not to chase after the wrong things too! :)Blessings and hugs,Denise
