5 Tips to Battle Cultural Assimilation

Jan 8, 2023 | Faith

Someone described Robert Penn Warren as one who soaked up his era’s culture like emotional furniture. Boy, did that resonate with me.

While we are products of our generation, we are also products of the culture and how it affects who us.

As a Christian, does the culture influence you more than God’s Word?

Cultural simulation challenges me. What do I soak in like it were emotional furniture? What rooms am I occupying, what kind of space am I taking up, and how am I influencing others?

If you struggle with being in the world, but not of the world, here are some tips to battle cultural assimilation. :

1. Saturate yourself in the Bible. Find a good reading plan. Start with the Psalms, Proverbs, or one of the gospels. Use resources like You-version or other online tools to help you.

2. Meditate on Scripture. Place significant Bible verses in locations where you’ll see them throughout your day. Pray Scripture. Let it fill your mind, heart, and eyes more than other media.

3. Spend less time on social media, Netflix, and all screens.

4. Spend time with people who draw you towards Christ rather than away from Christ.

5. Build quiet spaces in your day. Turn off the radio, reels, and rants.

These are just a few ways to help be less conformed to the world by renewing your mind through God’s word.

I wonder how the culture is colliding with you? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
