Detox

Detox.

This week I’m doing this detox thing which is supposed to get rid of toxins, bodily waste, bloating, etc…..all the symptoms I seem to be plagued with these days.

Gotta love the aging process.

I don’t know whether it will work or not, but I like the idea of detoxing.  Similar to substance abuse detox….getting rid of bad substances.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could spiritually detox?  Or perhaps, we can.

It just takes work.

Reading the Word of God.
Prayer.
Action.

Romans 12:1-2….Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

So, I guess we do have a spiritual detox plan.  Don’t be conformed by the world, but be transformed, allowing God to change us the way He desires.  This requires giving up our will.

Offering our bodies as a living sacrifice.  Just like we should take care of our body physically to keep toxins out and remain healthy, offering our bodies to Christ requires going against our flesh – having self-discipline in the most personal way, with our bodies.  We usually like to do what feels good in the moment.  But God says, offer yourself as a living sacrifice – giving up our will, again.

Detoxing on God’s terms probably is not as simple as the three sets of pills I am taking to eliminate the Pillsbury Doughboy feeling driving me to physically detox.  Thinking about spiritual detox makes me want to put as much, if not more, into being spiritually healthy.

I want to be spiritually healthy.  When I’m not, I don’t feel good, just like when I am unhealthy physically.  Both take action.  So, in addition to the herbal pills and elliptical exercise I have committed to partake of, I need to equally choose to get up early and spend time in His word.  Consistently.  Only then can I be transformed and renewed.

And it probably won’t be as bothersome or nauseating as the chemical detox.

It will probably be energizing and refreshing.

In the end, it will be worth it all.

If I can just do my part.
